This piece started out as research into different types of pattern welding. The blade steels are 1095 and 15N20, forge welded into 16 layers, then cut, twisted, restacked and forge welded again before drawing out. The result is a wonderful herringbone pattern reminiscent of historical Viking swords. The guard and pommel are forged from 200 year old wrought iron chain links retrieved from the Delaware River. The chain was originally attached to a 22 foot copper clad mooring pick anchor that weighed nearly 9 tons and was used by the US Navy in the early 1800's. The handle materials include ironwood, red heart, copper and red stag antler. It's sheath is vegetable tanned mahogany dyed leather and is reversible in its wear.
